meta: Sherlock fic rec post

Cap and Nat
As you've noticed on my journal, I am digging Sherlock BBC! (Are you?) A dynamic duo of crime-solvers who save the day (and each other)? Yes, please! Plus, as coeurdesoleil reminded me in her latest post, Spock cites Sherlock as an ancestor. Specifically, Spock says, "An ancestor of mine maintained that once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth," which is attributed to Sherlock. Clearly everyone's head canon should now draw the limbs of the imaginary ancestral tree from the doyen of deduction to the logic lover. I rest my case. ;)

And now, I bring you John and Sherlock fic recs! What kinds of stories will you find here? This isn't an 'epic' fic rec list. It's primarily feel-good fluff with, imo, lovely interpretations of characters who are difficult to capture.
Speaking of capturing (hearts), aren't they precious? And awesome, and complex, and good at banter, and with dark sides, and with light sides (ask me about my Jedi Sherlock head canon, lol), and they really care about each other, and...ahem *throat clearing before more flailing commences and I never get to the recs*

Follow the leader by empyrean@DW. Summary: John solves a crime and Sherlock finds this indescribably attractive. Naturally, this leads to making out over a corpse. John tries hard to be moral, and doesn't quite succeed. Why read it? This one has Sherlock completely head over heels for John because John did something smart, and it was just swoon-worthy how genuine he was in his affection! (IC for me because 1) location of snogging, and 2) reason for snogging).

Apologies for Large Feet by BlackEyedGirl. Summary: Sherlock can see his way through most problems in a single glance. John is something of an anomaly. Why read it? Characterization of both Johna and Sherlock is appealing. Often, BBC Sherlock (even in his official blog) comes off as a petulant but genius child. This author tackles that head on: He registers it when Sherlock calls him an idiot, and credulous, and too easily amazed. But he doesn't register it as an insult. Sherlock's insults are something carefully constructed, wielded inexpertly. He doesn't know what will upset people, and hurts them more unintentionally than by any deliberate aim. Child, Lestrade said, but it's not quite that. A child, yes, will say the first thing that comes into its head, and not know why it shouldn't. It's not the same as what Sherlock does. And here's a great snippet of Sherlock about John: Okay is not the word Sherlock would use. He’s not sure which he would choose, given the option. Something stronger than okay, but he doesn’t have that language. He’s only sure that they are friends because John said it first. Like is easy, like goes along with friendship. He doesn’t have a word for John’s odd familiar smile, or the way he talks under his breath knowing perfectly well Sherlock will hear him. It’s normally complaints, but not always. Sometimes it’s just this. Lovely stuff!

Usual by curlyqqueen. Prompt: Okay so Sherlock gets an anon message from a "secret admirer" who asks him to meet them at some place for a date. Sherlock acts like it's no big deal but on the inside he's flattered because everyone sees him as a freak. Somehow though John finds out it was a set up by Donovan and Anderson to catch the detective and humiliate him. So, he plays hero and steps in as the "fake" date to save Sherlock. Cuteness yes? Why read it? Cuteness *does* abound in this short, lighthearted romp - and don't worry about getting bored (Sherlock, I'm looking at you), there's a twist!

Who Wants To Be Normal, Anyway? (Abnormality Is Much More Fun.) by podicus . Summary: In which John sighs a lot, emotions are stupid, no one notices that they’re not actually dating, Sherlock is infuriating and heterosexuality is overrated, anyway. Why read it? Sherlock sets them up on a ~double-date~.

Lab Book by sam_storyteller@DW. Summary: "The likelihood of finding a cab on Christmas Eve is fast approaching nil." "So was the likelihood of you kissing me in the middle of the pavement, and yet." Why read it? Dialogue.
"You said you were married to your work," John told him.
"You are a part of my work, now," Sherlock replied calmly.
John laughed, because what the hell else could he do? "So we're married."

The Trick Is To Make It Look Easy by paperclipbitch. Summary: “Your blog only has one sentence on it,” Sherlock tells him. Why read it? It's so lovely! It's mostly pre-slash, has some genuine thoughtfulness, and I just like it.

A Sleeping Sherlock by ruyu. Summary: John recounts the first time Sherlock falls asleep on him. Why read it? Warm fuzzies. It's like this fic is a snuggie - almost embarrassing to be seen with, but secretly you just want to be left alone to squish it.

On the Tip of his Tongue by garryowen@DW. Summary: Sherlock can't stop thinking about John's tongue. Why read it? Garryowen - and myself - have both observed that John has a tongue thing (reminiscent of Chris Pine, y/y?), and in this story, Sherlock notices too.

How Gladstone Came to Live at Baker Street by garryowen@DW. Summary: Home is wear the dog is. Why read it? John and Sherlock get a dog - *our* dog - and adorableness ensues.

Autopsis by spikeface. Summary: Sherlock always needs to see for himself. Why read it? First note, this is *not* fluff! No surprise there, since you might recognize the author as a prolific producer of Star Trek mirror!verse fic. Reading this fic was, for me, like watching a scary movie; I was interested, riveted even, but haunted. I'm recc'ing it because something that drew me is that while Sherlock and John are really screwed up, they're screwed up together. They're both broken, but in a complementary way.

The scene for this gif led me to a song for my imaginary John/Sherlock fanmix. The song is A Wink And A Smile (Harry Connick, Jr), because John and Sherlock go together like a wink and a smile. :P
Anyway, if you like the fandom or are interested, talk to me! :)
Things I don't like chatting about in this fandom: hate issues; sexual positions.
Things I like chatting about in this fandom: characterization, how awesome John and Sherlock are, the actors, book canon (I know nothing - enlighten me!), predictions, flailing, how much fun attempting (and probably mucking up) British language is, and of course, fan fics! Even though (essentially) all the fics I put here are happy, I do read angst and drama, so don't hesitate to rec me those too if they feature John and Sherlock.

Lastly, I haz a dedicated John/Sherlock tumblr! FuckYeahJohnSherlock!

Haha, I've been working on a rec list these past two days! Some are here, but I've got a few others so I think I'll still go along with it, but either way.... I'M DEFINITELY READING THE ONES YOU REC'D THAT I HAVEN'T READ YET! YAY!

I will be definitely following that tumblr account, too. So if you see a lamialilith, that'd be me!

These are all excellent recs! "Autopsis" is so much darker than the others, but I think it is probably my favorite. To me, it's sort of like Sherlock mirror!fic, and yet not because it's also chillingly close to the canon characterization in some ways - definitely much more so than the Trek mirror!verse.

I also really really loved "Who Wants To Be Normal Anyway" and "The Trick Is to Make It Look Easy! Very funny, but they've also got emotional depth.

Anyway, thank you so much for these recs!

Oh, and btw, remember how I hired you as my professional K/S reccer a while back? Consider yourself hired for S/J fics as well!! ;)

Coolio. I haven't really been reading except on AO3 because I'm overwhelmed by the comm. I'll let you sift through for me! Yay! Will read these tomorrow!

OMG the (many) comms here are insane, and I'm guessing it's because it's a young fandom? I mean, by time I was in Star Trek, all the kinks were worked out (and by that I mean in, har har). I am making a second rec post with darker themes soon. :)

Going through this nooooow! xD
If you're interested in more Sherlock fic, my journal is basically one big rec list. Yeah. A really disorganised one that recs most things at least twice, but.. there's some good fic on that.
